Too many choices lead to bad decision. This phenomenon is known as ‘paradox of science’ by Barry Schwartz. He says, ‘when people have no choice, life is unbearable’. As the choices increase it brings liberation and positivity. As choices increase more, negative aspect of options begin to appear. As the numbers of choices further grow, negativity escalates until we are overloaded. Here, at this point choice is not liberation but debilitation.
Too many choices abscond, exhaust and make an individual unhappy which abscond form making decision all together. This is ‘choice overload’. With the increase in number of options, cost, time, effort for gathering information also increases. Level of certainty that an individual has about choices decreases and in turn anticipation they will regret is increase in choice.
Why and how to make decisions can helps us in making better choices. For eg. It is important to make big decisions in the morning rather at the end of the day when all the energy is exhausted. ‘Sleep on it’ idiom has clout when it comes to making decisions which are really important and big in life.
If there are too many options energy is probably hoarded. We try to conserve our energy based on price, instead of considering all other factors. When an individual is given too many features for a particular product, they ask for default options instead of weighing each decision. When there are endless options we tend to follow conventional path because it is easier to move on.
